Understanding the Rules of rugby

Before you start laying rugby, it is very important that you should understand the rules of rugby. So, let us begin with the basics so that it becomes simpler for you to understand the game.

What is rugby?

Basically, this is an exciting game that is played outdoor with two teams having 15 players each. The rugby rules are basically decided according to the two sets:

  • Rugby Union
  • Rugby League

What is a “match”?

“Match” is a union game of rugby and the duration for this is 80 minutes. The match is played over two halves which are 40 minutes each. A match will have one referee and two other assistant referees. The basic objective, like any other sport is to score the maximum points in order to win the game.

How is rugby played?

The team having possession (having the rugby ball), moves it towards the goal line of the opponent team and tried to make a goal. In “open play”, a team will have two ways of making a goal. The defending or the opponent team can stop the goal in these ways:

  • Stopping the player with possession
  • Taking ball control, also called “Turn Over”
  • Attack for other goal

This process gives birth to the entire match.

Restarting match because of foul or rule-break

In case the rules of rugby have been broken or foul is being made, the game begins again with

  • Free kick
  • Penalty kick
  • A scrum

It is not an easy task to understand the Rugby rules. Even the basic rules require a lot of understanding and so, you should understand these rules more and more for playing the game of Rugby.
